Leadership Tip

How to feel happier

The spring equinox arrived today. Here in Britain spring has officially sprung - the days are getting longer and the air is getting warmer. For many people it is a time when they will start to feel happier - seasonal affective disorder tends to be a much bigger problem during the winter months.

The spring equinox also coincided with World Happiness Day, that takes place on this day each year. But what actually is happiness? There are many ways of describing happiness, but only those who are happy know what it means to be happy. There is nobody who has not been happy. Everybody has been happy, but the problem is they are not able to maintain it, that is all. Here's how:

  1. Connect with people. Relationships are the most important overall contributor to happiness. People with strong and broad social relationships are happier, healthier and live longer. Close relationships with family and friends provide love, meaning and support, and increase our feelings of selfworth.

  2. Live a life of integrity. Those who live a genuine and honest life true to who they are as a person are happier than those who try to conform to social and peer pressures.

  3. Avoid comparisons. You're probably picking top performers to measure yourself by, which means you're probably never going to come out on top. Ditch the comparisons and focus instead on where you are and where you want to go.
